Bitcoin terms / Before you fund a purchase
An OTC desk arranges purchases or sales directly with a customer through an agreed quote. OTC means “over the counter.” In crypto, the desk may trade with you or arrange another counterparty. Ask who is responsible before accepting.

An over-the-counter desk is a service that helps arrange a trade directly between parties under agreed terms. In a Bitcoin purchase, you ask for terms for a specific amount, review the quote and follow the agreed funding and delivery process. That customer agreement happens outside the public order-book interface for the trade.
A desk can act as the buyer or seller, or help arrange a counterparty. It may use exchanges or other sources of liquidity behind the scenes. Ask which legal entity you are dealing with and whether it trades with you or acts for you.
The expression also appears in securities markets. Investor.gov explains OTC securities as securities that are not listed on a national securities exchange. A crypto OTC desk has its own account, asset and transaction terms. Confirm which market and service a provider means.
In plain English: you agree to a quoted trade with a named provider or counterparty. Before accepting, understand the price, what you owe, what you receive and when each party must deliver.
A desk can quote an asset and amount, explain its funding requirements and arrange settlement under its terms. Minimums, eligible customers and available services vary. An “OTC” label alone does not establish a better price or automatic approval.
| Responsibility | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Counterparty | Which legal entity is my agreement with, and who receives my payment? |
| Quote | Is this an estimate or an offer I can accept? Which costs are included? |
| Acceptance | When does my approval become binding, and when does the quote expire? |
| Settlement | When do I fund, and will Bitcoin arrive in an account or my supported wallet? |
| Support | Who can confirm bank receipt, trade status and Bitcoin delivery? |

For a current provider example, Kraken describes chat-based trading and automated requests for quotes. Its automated settlement uses existing account funds. Availability and terms depend on the actual service and account. Those features are Kraken’s; they do not describe every desk or Crypto Dispensers.
The sequence depends on the provider’s funding and settlement terms. These checkpoints show what to establish before you commit.
Tell the provider the asset, amount and intended destination. Complete the requested identity, account and funding checks. Ask about eligibility and any minimum before transferring money.
Check the price, quantity, full cost, expiry and destination. Ask what accepting authorizes and what happens if funding is late or an additional review is needed.
Some services require funds in an account before a trade; others offer settlement arrangements to eligible clients. Verify the instructions through the provider’s official channel. Save the accepted terms and the appropriate payment and delivery records.
A quote request, an accepted trade, bank receipt and Bitcoin delivery are different milestones. Ask which one the status on your screen confirms. Our wire tracing guide explains the bank and Bitcoin records for an assisted wire purchase.
An exchange order book matches orders under its trading rules. An OTC customer agrees to the terms offered for a quoted trade. A provider can offer both interfaces, and the desk can use exchange liquidity to complete its side.
| Question | Quoted OTC purchase | Order-book purchase |
|---|---|---|
| How is the trade priced? | Review the quote for the agreed asset and size, its expiry and included costs. | Review order type, available prices, trading fees and possible partial fills. |
| Who handles the order? | Confirm the counterparty and what the desk agrees to arrange. | Confirm the account, trading interface and order rules you will use. |
| Where does the purchase finish? | Check whether settlement includes account credit or external wallet delivery. | Check the available balance and any later withdrawal conditions. |
| What needs checking? | Funding obligations, counterparty performance and settlement terms. | Order handling, available balance, custody and withdrawal terms. |

Neither description by itself tells you the full cost or removes transaction risk. Our OTC versus exchange guide compares the purchase steps in more detail.
Ask for the complete dollars you would pay and the final Bitcoin amount at the same endpoint. A fee included in a quote has already affected that result. Count a separately billed bank or delivery charge once.
An indicative price is an estimate. An executable quote can be accepted under its stated conditions. Check the expiry and ask when acceptance becomes binding. A wire receipt alone does not establish that a purchase price has been reserved.
“Please confirm the legal counterparty, what accepting your quote authorizes, the full dollars I would pay, where the Bitcoin would be delivered and any costs or checks still outstanding. Which record will confirm each stage?”
Use our wire-provider comparison scorecard to record equivalent terms. The Bitcoin quote-comparison calculator can help compare total cash outlay and net BTC for illustrative or actual quotes you enter.
Keep passwords, login codes and wallet recovery phrases private. Stop if someone asks for an extra payment to unlock an unexplained order, pressures you to ignore checks or promises a guaranteed return. See our wire-purchase safety checks.
Market prices can fall after a purchase. This guide explains terminology and preparation; it does not recommend an investment or determine whether a particular trade suits your finances.
Crypto Dispensers helps customers prepare a bank payment, understand the quote and receive Bitcoin in their supported wallet. After funds arrive and the required review is complete, you approve the final price before we buy. The account request and bank receipt are earlier steps.
Use that sequence when comparing our service with an OTC desk, a prefunded trading account or another provider. The service name alone does not establish equivalent pricing or settlement terms. We do not offer every desk model described in this article.

OTC stands for over the counter. In crypto, an OTC desk arranges a quoted trade directly with a customer or counterparty under agreed terms. Confirm the specific service, account and settlement arrangement.
A desk may trade with you as a counterparty or arrange a trade through another party. Ask the provider which role it takes and which legal entity is responsible under your agreement.
Many desks focus on larger trades, but their minimums and eligible customers vary. Ask about your amount and account. There is no single minimum that applies to every desk.
Compare complete offers for the same amount and destination. Check the quoted price, spread, fees, bank costs and any later withdrawal charge. A desk label does not determine which offer costs less.
OTC describes the trading arrangement. Providers can require identity, account and funding checks. A private quote does not remove those requirements or guarantee anonymity.
That depends on the agreement. At Crypto Dispensers, final price approval comes after funds arrive and required review is complete. Sending a wire or opening a request does not by itself reserve a price.
