Does the wallet accept the destination as a Bitcoin address for the selected network?
A Bitcoin address can be valid and still belong to the wrong person. Before you authorize a transfer, confirm the source, network, complete address, QR details, and recipient.
This guide gives you a practical five-step check for self-custody transfers, exchange withdrawals, purchases, and QR-code payment requests.
Get the address from a trusted source, confirm the request with the recipient through an independent channel, select the Bitcoin network, and compare the entire destination shown on the final approval screen. A format check can catch some mistakes; it cannot prove who controls the address or whether the request is legitimate.
Start with the right question
A Bitcoin receiving address is a destination for a transaction. Wallet software can usually recognize whether the address is formatted for Bitcoin, but that is only one layer of the decision.
A valid format does not identify the person behind the address. It does not prove that the address came from the intended recipient, that a copied value was not replaced, or that a payment request is safe. The useful question is not only “Is this a Bitcoin address?” It is “Did I independently confirm this exact destination and the reason I am sending?”

Did the intended recipient confirm that they control this exact address? A public lookup alone cannot establish that.
A receiving address is designed to be shared. Wallet secrets are not. Anyone asking for those secrets is not performing a legitimate address check.
Before you approve
Run these checks on the device or wallet screen that will actually authorize the transfer. Slow down whenever a value changes between screens.
Verify the payment or withdrawal request through a channel you already trust. For another person or business, contact them through a known number, official account, or authenticated portal—not a link or number included in an unexpected message.
Open the recipient wallet or destination account directly and generate or display its current Bitcoin receive address. Avoid copying a destination from old transaction history, search results, public comments, screenshots, or a message forwarded by someone else.
Make sure the receiving screen and the sending screen both identify Bitcoin. Do not assume that a similar-looking crypto address or a network option with “BTC” in its label is interchangeable with the Bitcoin network.
After pasting or scanning, compare the complete address shown on the final approval screen with the trusted source. Bitcoin.org advises checking the whole receiving address, not only the beginning and end. If a hardware wallet displays transaction details, treat that device screen as the final value you are authorizing.
Check the Bitcoin amount, network fee, and destination one final time. For a material transfer, consider a small test only after the recipient confirms the exact address and can verify receipt. A test creates another network transaction and does not prove that an unknown recipient is trustworthy.
Scan, then inspect
Bitcoin payment QR codes can encode a receiving address and may also include an amount, label, or message. Scanning saves typing, but the wallet still needs your approval. Review the decoded destination and any prefilled amount before you continue.
The Bitcoin developer guide warns that payment requests must be delivered through secure methods because an attacker can replace the intended address. The FTC also warns that scammers supply QR codes that direct cryptocurrency to the scammer’s wallet.
A caller, pop-up, social account, or stranger sends a code and tells you to scan it to protect money, pay a fee, unlock an account, or receive a refund.
The address shown in the wallet does not match the value you copied. Cancel the transfer and use a trusted, updated device before trying again.
A familiar-looking history entry is not a reliable source. Request a current address and compare the whole value.
Addresses can be made to look similar at a glance. Compare the complete destination rather than relying on a few characters.
A syntactically accepted destination is not enough if the sending and receiving sides are using different assets or networks.
If someone insists that delay will cost you money or create legal trouble, stop the conversation and verify through an official channel.
Keep the concepts separate
Your wallet recognizes the destination’s format. This can reject some typos, but it does not identify the owner.
A block explorer may show transactions linked to an address. Public history still does not prove the identity or intent of the person controlling it.
You confirm the exact destination with the intended recipient through a separate trusted channel. This is the human check a format test cannot replace.
Purchased Bitcoin is sent to the customer-selected external destination after the applicable account, transaction, and wallet steps. The address you select matters, so compare it carefully before you authorize a purchase or transfer.
Do not send again
Bitcoin transactions are designed to be difficult to reverse. A valid transfer normally cannot be canceled by a wallet company, exchange, or payment service after it is broadcast. The person controlling the destination may be the only one who can return the funds.
Do not repeat the transaction. Save the destination address, amount, time, transaction ID, and screenshots of the sending record.
Use the official support channel for the wallet, exchange, or service you used. Ask whether the transaction was broadcast and what account-specific options, if any, remain. Do not assume support can reverse it.
If you know who controls the destination, ask them to return the Bitcoin to a newly verified address. Never share wallet secrets as part of that request.
If the pasted destination was different from the copied one, stop using that device for financial activity until it has been checked. From a trusted device, secure affected accounts and review recent access.
If deception was involved, preserve messages and payment details, notify the sending service, and report the incident through ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
