Bitcoin history / Names and evidence
Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used by Bitcoin’s creator. Possible Japanese meanings depend on the written characters. The original Bitcoin documents reviewed here use Roman letters, so they do not establish a particular kanji spelling or an intended English translation.

There is no single confirmed English translation of Bitcoin’s creator’s name in the records we reviewed. Japanese characters that can be read as Satoshi include characters associated with intelligence or wisdom. Those are possible name interpretations. Establishing the author’s intended meaning would also require evidence of their chosen characters and explanation.
The Bitcoin whitepaper prints “Satoshi Nakamoto” in Roman letters. The October 31, 2008 announcement uses that name too. Neither document supplies a Japanese spelling or explains why the name was chosen.
For the wider creation timeline, read who founded Bitcoin. This guide focuses on what a translation can establish.
These examples show why the written form matters. They are dictionary examples, with our short English glosses. We have not verified either character as the Bitcoin author’s chosen spelling.
| Character example | Dictionary evidence | What you can conclude |
|---|---|---|
| 聡 | Shogakukan’s Digital Daijisen lists さとし among its name readings and describes understanding or cleverness. | This character can support a name meaning such as intelligent or perceptive. |
| 智 | Digital Daijisen also lists さとし as a name reading and connects the character with understanding and wisdom. | This is another possible character, with its own associations. |

Read the Japanese dictionary entries for 聡 and 智. Each entry contains several readings. A general character pronunciation and a reading used in a personal name can differ.
Seeing “wise” or “intelligent” in an explanation therefore tells you which interpretation a writer has selected. Ask which characters the explanation assumes and where that spelling came from.
A character-based explanation might use 中本. Kanjipedia gives 中 the reading naka and meanings including middle or inside. It gives 本 the reading moto and meanings including origin or basis. These character meanings help explain why English discussions suggest phrases involving a central origin.
The linked dictionary entries explain the individual characters: 中 and 本. Combining selected glosses is an interpretation. Those entries do not connect this spelling to the Bitcoin author or establish a hidden message.
A surname also does not need to translate naturally into an English sentence. Adding a possible given-name gloss to possible surname glosses cannot, by itself, reveal why a particular person chose a pseudonym.
If a post says the name proves who invented Bitcoin, check the evidence in this order:
For example, “this character can be read as Satoshi” is a dictionary claim. “Bitcoin’s creator selected this character to send a message” is a claim about a particular author’s choice. The second claim needs evidence beyond the dictionary.
Our founder guide explains the limits of identity evidence. Our Satoshi holdings guide makes a similar distinction between mining-pattern attribution and verified ownership.
In Bitcoin amounts, a satoshi is a unit: one hundred-millionth of one BTC. The unit definition can be checked in Bitcoin Core’s amount definitions. Its dollar value changes with the Bitcoin price.
A sentence such as “my wallet has 1,000 sats” describes an amount. A sentence about “Satoshi Nakamoto” refers to the creator’s public name. Neither a balance denominated in sats nor a name translation establishes who controls particular Bitcoin.
Use our BTC-to-sats guide for the fixed unit conversion, or our USD-to-satoshi calculator for a dollar amount at a price you choose.
Some characters that can be read as Satoshi are associated with wisdom or intelligence. The meaning depends on the characters. The original Bitcoin documents reviewed here do not establish the author’s chosen Japanese spelling.
There is no confirmed English translation supplied by the original documents reviewed here. Proposed English phrases depend on assumed Japanese characters and selected dictionary glosses.
A Japanese name alone cannot establish the author’s nationality, residence or real-world identity. Those are separate factual claims.
It is the name used on the Bitcoin whitepaper and early announcements. The records do not verify a civil identity behind it. Read our founder guide for the documented timeline.
A satoshi in a Bitcoin balance is a unit equal to 0.00000001 BTC. Satoshi Nakamoto is the creator’s public name. Context tells you which meaning a sentence uses.
