Bitcoin buying / Provider comparison
Compare the quote.
Check when Bitcoin can leave.
River is designed around Bitcoin. Coinbase supports a broader range of crypto assets and offers both a simple purchase flow and Advanced trading. Start with that distinction: are you looking for a Bitcoin-focused buying routine, or do you need other assets and order-book controls?
There is no universal cheaper option. Recurring purchases, a one-time bank-funded order, and an actively traded order are different comparisons. Judge the route you will actually use, including the amount of Bitcoin you can move to your own wallet.
| Decision | River | Coinbase |
|---|---|---|
| Asset scope | Bitcoin-focused service | Bitcoin and other supported crypto assets |
| Purchase approach | One-time and recurring Bitcoin buys | Simple buying plus Advanced trading |
| Funding to inspect | ACH or wire | ACH, wire, and eligible debit-card routes |
| Cost comparison | Order fee, price spread, and sending costs | Simple or Advanced fees, execution price, and sending costs |
Sources: River’s terms and Coinbase’s comparison of its trading experiences.
River’s published fee for a one-time order up to $1 million is 1%. Eligible recurring buys become fee-free starting seven days after initiation; a spread may still apply. Read River’s fee schedule.
Coinbase simple-trade charges vary and its quoted price includes a spread. Advanced uses an order book with maker/taker fees, rather than an added Coinbase spread. An order book still has a difference between bids and asks, and market orders can experience slippage. Read Coinbase’s fee disclosures and Advanced fee guidance.
Compare quotes taken close together for the same dollar outlay. Divide total dollars paid by the net BTC you expect to receive at the same destination. Include a separate bank charge or wallet-send charge once, without counting fees already deducted in the quote twice.
For example, an invented $500 quote delivering 0.005 BTC implies $100,000 per BTC. Another invented $500 quote delivering 0.00495 BTC implies about $101,010 per BTC. The second delivers less Bitcoin even if its visible transaction fee looks lower. These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not current provider prices.
Use the Bitcoin quote-comparison calculator to compare your entered figures. A chart price is a reference, not an executable offer.
River’s terms describe ACH and wire funding and do not support debit- or credit-card purchases. Coinbase lists U.S. bank and eligible debit-card methods, with different uses and processing times. Check River’s current terms and Coinbase’s U.S. payment-method table for your intended route.
Do not treat a completed bank debit, a purchased balance, and withdrawable Bitcoin as the same milestone. Before funding either account, ask when funds settle, when the buy executes, and when the resulting Bitcoin becomes available to send. Account-specific reviews or holds can affect those stages.
For a wire, obtain current instructions through the genuine account, confirm the beneficiary and required reference, and ask your bank about cutoffs and its own charge. Never send money using bank details supplied only in an unsolicited message.
If you intend to keep your own keys, compare the entire path from your bank to your wallet. Check the supported network, the complete receiving address, and the net amount after any send charge. River explains its Bitcoin network fees; Coinbase describes off-platform send charges in its fee disclosures.
A recurring Bitcoin routine: compare the schedule, first purchases, ongoing quote, and wallet-transfer controls. River’s recurring-buy structure deserves a close look if your goal is repeated Bitcoin purchases. A recurring plan does not protect against losses or establish that a particular purchase price is good.
Multiple assets or order control: Coinbase’s broader asset support and Advanced interface may be relevant. Decide whether you actually need a limit order or other trading controls. A more complex interface is useful only if you understand what the order does, when it fills, and how fees are assessed.
A supported wire purchase: compare the human support and quote-confirmation process as well as the transaction cost. Crypto Dispensers offers a white-glove Bitcoin wire-transfer route with verified instructions, pricing confirmation before execution, and wallet delivery. Review the actual terms; we are not claiming it beats every competing quote.
For a different payment method, review our ACH, debit-card, and credit-card pages. Availability depends on the route, provider, and account.
Is River cheaper than Coinbase? A single percentage cannot answer that. Compare the same purchase type, current execution price, applicable fees, and delivery destination. Do not compare River’s recurring-buy headline with a Coinbase one-time card purchase and call that an equivalent test.
Does Coinbase Advanced eliminate every cost? No. Trading fees still apply, and your order executes against available market liquidity. Review the current fee tier and order preview.
Can I transfer the Bitcoin to my own wallet? Check each account’s available-to-send balance, network, and send preview. A displayed Bitcoin balance does not establish immediate withdrawal eligibility.
