MetaMask swap fees: understand the fee, gas and net output.

Before you swap, check how MetaMask’s fee appears in the quote and how you’ll pay the network cost. Our worked example helps you read the receiving amount and compare the total.

How much does MetaMask charge to swap?

MetaMask’s current Swaps guide lists a 0.875% MetaMask fee, alongside the quoted exchange rate and network gas. That percentage describes one part of the cost of using MetaMask’s built-in Swap feature. Your receiving amount, network costs and any additional transaction steps determine the complete comparison. We’ll help you reconcile those figures before you sign. If you connect MetaMask to a separate exchange website, check that exchange’s pricing and transaction preview; this guide’s published MetaMask Swaps fee should not be applied automatically to that separate service.

For the full comparison method and an editable worksheet, read our Ethereum swap fees guide. Our crypto-to-crypto swap guide covers quotes, networks and delivery from start to finish.

What does 0.875% mean in dollars?

Multiply the value being used for your fee estimate by 0.00875. On a hypothetical $1,000 swap, the fee component is $8.75. The table isolates that arithmetic so you can understand the percentage.

Illustrative swap valueValue × 0.00875
$100$0.875, about $0.88
$1,000$8.75
$5,000$43.75

These figures exclude network costs, other applicable charges and changes in the exchange rate. A dollar value shown in a wallet is also an estimate. Use the actual token amounts in the current preview when deciding whether to proceed.

An original worksheet for reading a MetaMask quote.

Imagine you’re swapping 1,000 USDC on Ethereum for ETH on Ethereum. For this example only, we value 1 USDC at $1 and ETH at $2,500. Assume the quoted net output is 0.395 ETH, every included charge is already reflected in that output, and your wallet asks you to pay another $4 of network costs separately.

RecordExampleHow to use it
Sending amount1,000 USDC$1,000 input value under the stated assumption.
Net ETH quoted0.395 ETHUse the amount expected after included charges.
Separate network costs$4Add once because the example pays them outside the input.
Total outlay$1,004$1,000 + $4.
Outlay per delivered ETH$2,541.77$1,004 ÷ 0.395 ETH.

At the illustrative $2,500 reference price, 0.395 ETH is worth $987.50. The gap between the $1,004 outlay and that reference value is $16.50. You cannot attribute that whole gap to MetaMask’s fee: the chosen reference price, quote rate, other included costs and market movement can all affect it.

This invented worksheet demonstrates a method. It is not a captured MetaMask quote or a measurement of today’s spread. To compare another service, request the same input and receiving network at roughly the same time, then calculate its outlay per delivered ETH using the same assumptions. Our Ethereum swap comparison guide helps you evaluate the alternatives.

Why can a swap need gas and a token approval?

Ethereum charges for the computation a transaction uses. A swap can involve more work than a simple transfer, and network demand affects the price. The wallet’s estimate is useful before signing; the confirmed transaction shows the actual network cost. Our gwei-to-USD calculator explains the units and calculation.

Some token swaps also require permission for a smart contract to spend your token. Read the spender, asset and spending limit in the permission screen. A separately submitted on-chain approval can have its own gas cost. The steps can vary with the token, existing allowance and account features.

Keep enough of the required gas asset for each separately funded step. An unlimited spending permission can leave more tokens exposed if the approved contract is compromised. Choose a limit you understand rather than accepting a broad allowance solely to avoid a future approval cost.

Does a gasless MetaMask swap still have fees?

Eligible MetaMask gasless swaps can include gas costs in the quote. This changes how you fund the cost. Read the preview for the token used to cover gas, the receiving amount and any account changes you’re asked to approve. Eligibility depends on the current assets, networks and account requirements. MetaMask explains the current prerequisites in its Swaps guide.

In your worksheet, place a cost already deducted from the quote in the included column. Place an extra payment requested outside the quote in the separate column. This keeps a gasless offer comparable with one that asks you to hold ETH for gas.

What should you check before you sign?

  1. Match the assets and networks. Confirm the token identity and the receiving network. Similar symbols or address formats can hide different assets.
  2. Record net output and separate costs. Include any required approval, funding or later transfer you actually plan to make.
  3. Read the minimum received. Slippage tolerance allows a range of outcomes. It is different from a fixed service charge.
  4. Review price impact. A large order relative to available liquidity can get a worse quote. Refresh the offer or compare a different amount before committing.
  5. Check a pending transaction before retrying. Use its status and transaction hash. Repeating a transaction can create another network cost.

MetaMask’s guide to receiving less than expected explains slippage and price impact. Its failed-swap guide confirms that a failed on-chain swap can still spend gas. Increasing slippage permits a worse outcome, so review that trade-off before changing it.

Common questions about swap fees.

Why are MetaMask swap fees high on a small swap?

A separately paid network cost can be a large share of a small swap. For example, a hypothetical $4 gas cost is 4% of $100 and 0.4% of $1,000, before any other costs. Check the actual quote rather than assuming the percentage fee explains the whole difference.

Do I pay MetaMask’s swap fee when using a DEX website?

A wallet connection alone does not identify the service pricing. For a swap initiated on a DEX website, review that site’s quote, protocol fees and wallet confirmation. MetaMask’s cited 0.875% applies to the built-in Swaps feature described by its guide.

Does swapping ETH for a stablecoin cash out to my bank?

The swap leaves you with another crypto asset. A bank payout requires a supported sale and payout process with its own costs and checks. Our MetaMask withdrawal guide walks through that separate task.

Can I recover gas from a failed swap?

Network resources can be charged even when an on-chain swap reverts. Check the transaction record and contact the relevant provider about the swap status. A service fee or refund question needs a review of that provider’s terms and the actual transaction.
