Buying Bitcoin / Platform comparison
Compare Gemini and Coinbase for Bitcoin purchases: trading fees, ACH and wire funding, withdrawal costs and access to your own wallet.
Both platforms let eligible customers buy Bitcoin and other supported cryptocurrencies. The useful comparison is between the specific purchase screens you will use. Gemini ActiveTrader and Coinbase Advanced use order books; a simple purchase screen can have a different cost structure. Neither brand name tells you the complete price of your purchase.
Crypto Dispensers offers crypto buying, selling and swapping services. We reviewed the linked provider documentation for this comparison; we did not place test trades. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the compared providers. Details below focus on U.S. personal accounts and can change.
| What to compare | Gemini | Coinbase |
|---|---|---|
| Trading interface | ActiveTrader has a published maker/taker schedule. | Advanced has account-specific maker/taker tiers; simple buying has separate pricing. |
| Bank funding | ACH and wire deposits are listed in its transfer schedule. | U.S. methods include ACH and wire deposits to a cash balance. |
| Withdrawal cost | Dynamic crypto withdrawal charge shown before sending. | Estimated network charge shown before sending off platform. |
| Before choosing | Check the fee tier and funds-clearing status. | Check the purchase mode and available-to-send balance. |
On a small screen, swipe the table to see every column.
Use the official Gemini trading schedule, Gemini transfer schedule, Coinbase Advanced fees and Coinbase payment-method guide for the matching transaction.
At review, Gemini’s entry ActiveTrader spot tier lists 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker fees. Higher qualifying tiers have lower rates. A limit order that fills immediately may be a taker order, so choosing “limit” does not by itself secure the maker rate. See the current tier rules.
Coinbase simple buys include a spread and a fee calculated for the order. Advanced uses maker/taker pricing and does not add that simple-buy spread. Check your current tier in the account. Coinbase’s fee disclosures explain the difference.
Put the same dollar budget and destination into each comparison. Record the dollars leaving your bank, the BTC purchased and the BTC expected in your wallet after a withdrawal. Add separately billed costs once. If a charge is already deducted from the quoted delivery, do not subtract it again.
A total payment of $1,000 delivers 0.01000 BTC to the same destination.
The same total payment delivers 0.00990 BTC. It delivers 0.00010 BTC less.
These invented quotes explain the calculation and are not Gemini or Coinbase offers. Quote A costs $100,000 per BTC delivered. Quote B costs about $101,010 per BTC delivered. A lower fee label alone would not reverse that result.

Gemini lists ACH and wire deposits without a Gemini deposit fee, although a bank can charge for a wire. Its U.S. ACH guide says deposits should clear in four to five business days and may carry withdrawal holds while clearing. Trading access during that period is discretionary. Transfer fees and ACH timing are separate documents.
Coinbase’s U.S. table lists ACH at one to five business days and wires at one to three business days, with a same-business-day note for wires sent before its stated cutoff. A wire adds cash; buying Bitcoin is a separate step. Read the current U.S. payment table and your account’s availability notice.
Before a bank transfer, save four answers: when the bank submits it, when the platform credits it, when you can complete the buy and when you can withdraw the Bitcoin. A holiday or review can affect the timeline. Do not promise someone a payment based only on a bank’s “sent” status.
If you are deciding between funding methods, our wire versus ACH guide explains the practical differences. For a Crypto Dispensers bank-funded purchase, review our ACH option or buying Bitcoin with a wire transfer.
Decide whether you want to keep the purchased balance with the platform or move it to a wallet you control. For your own wallet, confirm the receiving asset and network, then read the platform’s available-to-send amount and withdrawal preview. A portfolio balance is not always the amount available to withdraw.
Both providers publish separate information about crypto sends. Gemini uses a dynamic withdrawal charge; Coinbase describes an estimated network charge for off-platform sends. Read Gemini’s transfer schedule and Coinbase’s network-fee explanation before treating the trading fee as the final cost.
Copy the full receiving address from the genuine wallet, check it on the confirmation screen and follow any supported test-transfer procedure. Never send Bitcoin to an address intended for a different asset. Keep recovery phrases and private keys to yourself, including when speaking with support.
For an assisted purchase with our team, the Crypto Dispensers wire service explains bank instructions, price approval and delivery to your confirmed wallet. Our disclosed service fee is 8% below $100,000 and 5% at $100,000 or more; compare the full final quote and any separate bank or delivery charges. Personal assistance is a service difference, not a claim that we offer the lowest price.
It depends on the trading screen, fee tier, payment method and final withdrawal. Compare the same budget and destination using current quotes. This review does not name a universal cheapest provider.
No. The interfaces have different pricing mechanics. Confirm which one you are using before comparing a published fee.
Check the account’s available-to-send balance first. Bank settlement, holds and reviews can make trading available before a withdrawal is permitted.
Compare total cost, bank instructions, purchase approval, withdrawal availability and access to help. If you want our team to guide the purchase, review the wire-transfer service details before funding.

Choose your next step
Crypto prices can fall and you can lose money. Fees, availability, verification and timing depend on the service and your account. This is educational information, not a recommendation to buy an asset.
Your next step
Buy Bitcoin with wire, debit, credit or ACH. Sell supported crypto for USD paid to your bank, or swap between supported assets. Your account shows the options available to you.
Creating an account does not authorize a payment. Availability depends on your location, account and required checks.
