Divide mBTC by 1,000 to get BTC.

1 mBTC = 0.001 BTC = 100,000 satoshis. The prefix “milli” means one thousandth. To convert an amount from millibitcoins to bitcoins, divide by 1,000. To go from BTC to mBTC, multiply by 1,000.

When mBTC is used as a Bitcoin denomination, you are changing how the amount is written. You are not exchanging into another asset or moving money. The Bitcoin developer guide lists millibitcoin as 0.001 BTC and explains why the unit must accompany a payment amount.

Convert an mBTC amount to BTC and satoshis.

Enter the millibitcoin amount below. The result is a fixed unit conversion, so it does not need a live Bitcoin price. Five decimal places in mBTC are enough to represent whole satoshis.

Enter an amount with up to five decimal places. Use a decimal point, without commas.

The table and calculator exclude all purchase and transaction fees. They express the same quantity in different units. For the smaller unit, our satoshi guide explains sats in more detail.

Use the formula in either direction.

Three useful conversion formulas
From and toCalculationExample
mBTC to BTCmBTC ÷ 1,0007.25 mBTC ÷ 1,000 = 0.00725 BTC
BTC to mBTCBTC × 1,0000.012 BTC × 1,000 = 12 mBTC
mBTC to satoshismBTC × 100,0000.25 mBTC × 100,000 = 25,000 sats

On a small screen, swipe the table to see every column.

You can check a conversion by reversing it. If you calculated that 7.25 mBTC equals 0.00725 BTC, multiplying 0.00725 by 1,000 should return 7.25. This simple second check can catch an extra or missing zero.

Bitcoin.org’s FAQ explains that one Bitcoin is divisible into 100 million satoshis. That lets you check the same result using whole sats: 7.25 mBTC equals 725,000 sats, which also equals 0.00725 BTC.

A decimal point separates whole units from fractions in these examples. If your app uses a comma as a decimal separator, use the format that app expects and review its confirmation screen. Do not remove punctuation without checking what it means.

Changing a display unit does not change your Bitcoin.

A wallet may offer BTC, mBTC or sats as a display preference. A balance of 20 mBTC and a balance of 0.02 BTC can describe the same Bitcoin. Switching the display does not create a network transaction or increase the balance.

  • Read the unit next to the balance and next to the amount-entry field.
  • Convert the requested amount before entering it if the two units differ.
  • Confirm the asset and network, especially when using an exchange or a multichain wallet.
  • Review the recipient, amount and fee together on the final confirmation screen.

Do not treat every asset symbol that resembles “mBTC” as a Bitcoin denomination. Token tickers can be reused. An exchange token, wrapped asset or contract with a similar name requires its own asset and network checks. The fixed 1-to-1,000 conversion here applies to millibitcoin units of native BTC.

Our Bitcoin wallet guide explains addresses and key control. If you are sending a wrapped asset, read why wrapped Bitcoin cannot be sent to an ordinary Bitcoin address before making a transfer.

For a dollar value, add a BTC price and account for costs.

The unit conversion is fixed; the dollar value is not. After converting to BTC, multiply by the relevant dollar price per BTC. A price-chart estimate and an executable purchase or sale quote can differ.

When you review a purchase, ask for both the total dollars and the BTC amount you will receive. At Crypto Dispensers, our wire-transfer service explains quote approval and delivery to your wallet. Our ACH page describes another bank-funding option. The unit conversion remains the same whichever eligible payment option you use.

If you plan to sell, compare the net dollars after charges rather than multiplying a balance by a chart price and treating that as a promised payout. Our sell-crypto page explains supported sales and USD bank payouts.
