Wallet compatibility / Assets and networks
Can you send WBTC to a Bitcoin wallet? Learn why the asset and network must match, how conversion differs from sending, and what to check first.

Start with the quick answer ↓Wrapped Bitcoin is not native BTC, so a normal WBTC transfer cannot deliver Bitcoin to a native Bitcoin address. You need a receiving account that supports the exact token and network, or a supported conversion that delivers native BTC to your Bitcoin wallet.
A single wallet app can contain several accounts. Its Bitcoin account and its Ethereum account are not interchangeable just because they appear under one app name. Open the receiving account and check its asset and network before using its address.
The name “Bitcoin” in a token label is not enough to establish compatibility. This is a transfer checklist, not a recommendation to buy or hold a wrapped asset.
Native BTC is recorded and transferred on the Bitcoin network. Wrapped Bitcoin represents BTC through a token arrangement on another network. WBTC’s official site lists multiple supported networks and published contract details. WBTC on Ethereum is an ERC-20 token; that does not make every other token using the same ticker genuine.
| What you hold | What to verify | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Native BTC | Bitcoin receiving instructions | That an Ethereum token address can receive BTC. |
| WBTC on Ethereum | Ethereum account and correct token contract | That a Bitcoin address can receive ERC-20 tokens. |
| A Bitcoin-related token on another network | Exact token, network and receiving support | That support for WBTC elsewhere implies support here. |
On a small screen, swipe the table to see every column.
A wrapped asset also brings risks tied to its custody, redemption and smart-contract arrangements. A bridge can add further technical and counterparty risks. Read the relevant issuer and provider documentation instead of assuming that a token’s target relationship to BTC guarantees its market price or redemption availability.
For the basics of addresses and wallet accounts, read our Bitcoin address guide and Ethereum’s wallet explanation.
Sending an existing token moves that token on its current network. Swapping exchanges one asset for another under a provider’s quote. Redemption follows the wrapped asset’s own process. None of these should be inferred just from a wallet’s Send button.
A service may support BTC purchases without accepting WBTC deposits. It may also support a token on one network but not another. Never send funds to a general company address or an old deposit address to test whether a pair is supported.
Our crypto swap page explains how supported pairs and networks are selected. We are not asserting that a particular WBTC pair is available. Check the current options for your account and ask our team before sending if the exact pair is missing.
Ethereum transactions require gas paid in ETH. Holding WBTC by itself does not necessarily supply the ETH needed to transfer it. Other networks have their own fee assets and rules. Ethereum’s gas documentation explains the Ethereum case.
A small test can reduce address uncertainty only after you have established compatibility and checked minimums. It does not make an unsupported network safe. If you are buying native Bitcoin rather than converting existing tokens, our wire-transfer service and debit-card option explain the purchase process separately.
First, establish whether the wallet rejected the attempt or actually broadcast a transaction. If it was broadcast, record the transaction hash, token, network, destination and any order reference. A failed form entry and an accepted network transaction require different next steps.
Contact the receiving provider through its official help channel if it controls the destination. Recovery depends on the particular asset, network, keys and provider capabilities. It may be unavailable. Coinbase’s unsupported-deposit guidance is an example of why support and recovery eligibility are specific, not universal.
For a self-custody wallet, consult the wallet maker’s official instructions. Do not export a seed phrase or import it into an unfamiliar tool simply because someone claims to recover funds. Anyone asking for remote control, secret keys or an advance payment through an unsolicited message deserves particular caution.
A block explorer can show what happened on the originating network; it cannot convert or reverse the transaction for you. Our Bitcoin transaction lookup guide covers native BTC records. Use the appropriate network explorer for a token transfer.
Some devices and wallet software support both through separate accounts. Check the model, software, token and network. Support in one account does not make every receiving address interchangeable.
No. A label or display setting does not perform a swap or redemption. You need a supported process that explicitly delivers the intended asset and network.
No. The official WBTC site lists multiple networks. Always identify the exact version you hold and the network the receiving service supports.
Do not use a native Bitcoin receiving address for a WBTC token transfer. Follow a supported conversion’s instructions if your goal is native BTC.
No universal recovery is possible. Contact the service responsible for the destination with the transaction details. Availability depends on the specific circumstances.
