U.S. Bitcoin purchase comparison
Kraken and Coinbase both offer a simple purchase screen and an order book for spot trading. Start with the payment method your account supports, then compare the price, fees and Bitcoin you can send to your wallet.

For a quick purchase, compare a Kraken Instant Buy preview with a Coinbase simple-buy preview using the same dollar budget. For order-book trading, compare Kraken Pro spot with Coinbase Advanced for the same pair and order type. Start with eligibility if you live in a state with funding restrictions.

| Purchase method | Kraken | Coinbase |
|---|---|---|
| Simple purchase | Instant Buy generally lists a 1% trading fee. Small trades can have a different fee. Spread and payment charges can affect the quote. | Simple-buy fees vary with the transaction. Coinbase includes a spread in its quoted price. |
| Spot order book | Kraken Pro’s standard entry spot tier lists 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. Check your tier and pair. | Advanced uses maker and taker fees. Check the rate shown in your account. Coinbase says it adds no spread to Advanced orders. |
A maker order rests on the book and pays the maker fee if filled. A taker order matches existing orders immediately. A limit order can still incur a taker fee if it matches immediately. The prices available to buy and sell can differ on either order book, and a large market order may fill at several prices.

Kraken’s U.S. guide excludes New York and Maine residents. Its domestic funding table also excludes Texas for the specific Customers Bank FedWire and Plaid ACH options listed there. Check the funding methods your account actually offers.
Coinbase’s U.S. payment table lists ACH and wire for adding cash, along with eligible debit options. Check your account’s limits and confirm the timing for your intended payment. A purchase can show in your account before you can send it. Coinbase documents deposit holds and possible transfer restrictions. On Kraken, confirm the withdrawal availability, minimum and fee for your funding method and chosen network before buying.

Record total dollars spent and the quoted BTC on each platform at roughly the same time. Subtract a separate BTC withdrawal charge only if the quoted amount hasn’t already accounted for it. Use the same wallet and network for both estimates.
Suppose both options cost $1,000. Quote A shows 0.01000 BTC and deducts 0.00015 BTC when you send it. Your wallet would receive 0.00985 BTC. Quote B shows 0.00990 BTC with the send cost already included. B delivers 0.00005 BTC more. These are hypothetical quotes and do not represent either platform’s rates.
Also record the earliest expected send date. The larger net amount may still be unsuitable if the funding or withdrawal timeline misses your deadline.
The result depends on the interface, funding method, order size and withdrawal costs. Compare the actual previews and fee tiers for your order.
Both offer spot order-book trading. Check the pair, order controls, fee tier and funding options separately.
Confirm external sends are available for your account and choose a compatible network. Review the fee, minimum and any funding hold before sending.
