Start with the quick answer ↓On consumer Coinbase, selling Bitcoin and cashing out are two steps. The sale converts BTC into your selected balance. If you want U.S. dollars in a bank account, choose the USD cash balance for the sale, then request a withdrawal when the money is available.
This guide covers Coinbase’s hosted consumer account for a U.S. user. It is not a walkthrough for Coinbase Wallet, the Base app, Coinbase Prime or every Advanced order type. Check the exact product and account before following a button label.
These steps follow Coinbase’s official selling guide. The visible options can differ by region, account and app version. If you do not see the expected asset or destination, resolve that before confirming an order.
If your Bitcoin is in an external wallet, it is not yet part of the balance described here. Check deposit eligibility and current receiving instructions inside your own Coinbase account. Verify the asset and network before any transfer. A token that tracks Bitcoin on another network is not automatically interchangeable with native BTC.
Coinbase’s cash-out instructions currently use Withdraw Cash on the browser home page. In the app, open Cash, then Withdraw and Withdraw Cash. Enter the amount, verify the currency and choose the destination under Transfer To. Preview the withdrawal, review the charges and details, then confirm if you want to proceed.
| Record | What it shows | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Sale confirmation | BTC exchanged for the selected balance. | That a bank withdrawal has been requested. |
| Withdrawal confirmation | Cash sent toward the selected destination. | That the receiving bank has posted it. |
| Bank transaction | The amount posted to the bank account. | The original BTC acquisition cost or complete sale history. |
On a small screen, swipe the table to see every column.
Read the destination carefully, especially if several accounts are linked. The account must be eligible for the withdrawal option you select. Use the arrival estimate shown for that request instead of a general promise of instant cash-out.
A Bitcoin receiving address belongs in a crypto transfer flow, not in a bank withdrawal field. Sending BTC off-platform would move the asset; it would not turn it into a bank deposit.
Coinbase’s fee disclosures say simple buys and sells include a spread in the quoted price, with fees shown in the transaction preview. Cash-out charges depend on the chosen payment method. Advanced uses an order book rather than the added spread described for simple trades; it is a separate experience with its own trading costs.
A cash balance and an available-to-withdraw balance can differ. Coinbase’s available-balance guide says cash deposits may be held; crypto bought with held funds may be sold while cash-out remains restricted. The account shows availability information, and Coinbase says support cannot shorten a deposit hold.
If you can sell but cannot withdraw, check the balance summary and the specific restriction message. A deposit hold, transfer-protection setting or other account limitation needs its own resolution. Do not make another sale merely to test whether a pending withdrawal will complete.
For U.S. taxpayers, a sale of Bitcoin held as a capital asset can produce a capital gain or loss. The IRS digital-asset FAQ explains adjusted basis and amount realized. Moving the resulting cash to a bank is not what determines the original sale price or acquisition cost. Use qualified tax advice for your circumstances.
If you are choosing where to sell before sending crypto, our sell-crypto service page explains supported sales for USD bank payouts. Review asset and network support, verification, limits, the net quote and expected timing. Crypto Dispensers is a separate provider and cannot change a Coinbase hold.
Our ways-to-sell-Bitcoin guide helps compare payout methods. If you want a different crypto asset instead of dollars, read about our crypto-to-crypto exchange service. A swap does not deliver a USD bank payout.
No. A sale credits the selected balance. Request a separate withdrawal of available cash if you want it moved to your bank.
They are different balances. If your goal is a U.S. dollar bank payout, confirm that your sale destination and subsequent withdrawal are USD. Do not treat a stablecoin balance as an already completed bank deposit.
Trading availability and withdrawal availability can differ. Check the balance summary and account message for holds or restrictions, then use official Coinbase support if you need an explanation.
Not necessarily. Use the actual sale preview and withdrawal preview. The execution price, fees and payout method affect the dollars you ultimately receive.
This article covers the hosted consumer Coinbase account. A self-custody wallet is a different product; follow that product’s current asset-transfer or cash-out documentation.
No. Coinbase controls its accounts and restrictions. Our team can help with Crypto Dispensers transactions, not release another provider’s funds.
