03 / Keep control of the reason for buying
A payment demand is not a buying plan.
In its April 17, 2026 alert, the Michigan Attorney General warned about callers claiming to represent agencies or companies and directing people to Bitcoin ATMs to pay supposed bills or fines. The alert also describes false claims that a financial account is compromised.
If someone is steering your purchase that way, end the call and independently verify the claim. Do not trust the displayed phone number or grant remote access to your device. Contact the Michigan Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team and local law enforcement if you suspect a scam.
Never share your recovery phrase or use a stranger’s wallet address to protect your money. Save receipts, messages and transaction identifiers if funds have already moved. Reporting helps document the incident; recovery is not guaranteed.
A voluntary purchase still carries risk. Bitcoin can lose value after you buy, and losing access to a wallet can have lasting consequences. Choose the amount and custody arrangement deliberately, without pressure from a caller or an old claim that one service is your best option.
