Plan for authority and access together.

Crypto inheritance planning should explain who is authorized to act, how they can locate the assets and how the necessary access can be recovered. A legal document and a wallet backup answer different questions. A useful plan connects them without exposing the secrets that control the funds.

Start by identifying whether each holding is in self-custody, with a provider, or in a brokerage product. The process for a hosted account differs from recovering a wallet whose keys the owner controls. Include incapacity as well as death in the discussion with qualified counsel.

This guide is a preparation checklist, not a will, trust or statement of inheritance rights. Your jurisdiction, legal documents, provider terms and wallet design determine the actual process. Do not access or move another person’s assets without the required authority.

Make an inventory that does not contain spending secrets.

A person cannot follow instructions for an asset they do not know exists. Create a private index that identifies the type of holding, the relevant provider or wallet, and where the approved instructions can be found. Protect that index too: account names and balances can reveal sensitive financial information.

On a small screen, swipe the table to see every column.

These are invented labels, not a customer’s assets. The table is a planning prompt, not a request to enter information here. Ask your adviser how the index and instructions should be stored, updated and accessed under your actual estate plan.

For native BTC acquired through a bank purchase, retain the wire receipt, approved quote and Bitcoin delivery record. These help describe the purchase; they cannot replace the keys needed to spend from a self-custody wallet.

Identify the recovery process for each holding.

Self-custody

The wallet’s required backup and configuration matter. A device, PIN and receiving address are not necessarily enough to recover access after the owner is gone.

Hosted account

Use the provider’s official process for an authorized representative. Required records and verification depend on the provider and the circumstances.

Coinbase’s decedent-account instructions, for example, describe documentation and verification before an account claim can proceed. That is an example of one provider’s process, not a rule for every platform or a Crypto Dispensers service.

Ask counsel about the applicable documents, authority and provider permissions. The Uniform Law Commission’s digital-assets explanation is a starting point for understanding why fiduciary access needs legal planning. A model act does not tell you which rules apply to your particular estate.

Our custodial versus non-custodial wallet guide can help identify the operational arrangement before that discussion.

Include the wallet’s full recovery requirements.

Record the backup format and the wallet’s official recovery instructions. Do not assume that every wallet uses the same word count, standard or restoration steps. A list of addresses can help identify activity, but it cannot authorize a payment.

If an optional passphrase is enabled, the correct backup alone may open a different wallet from the one holding the funds. Trezor’s passphrase documentation explains why the exact passphrase must remain recoverable when that feature is used. This does not mean everyone needs to add a passphrase.

A multisignature setup needs its signing threshold and recovery configuration understood as well. Knowing where one device is stored may be insufficient. Review the full procedure with the wallet maker or responsible specialist before relying on it.

Use manufacturer-supported backup checks where available. Do not rehearse by typing recovery words into an unfamiliar website or giving them to an adviser, buyer or support agent. Our seed phrase guide explains the distinction between receiving information and spending secrets.

Walk through the plan without exposing the keys.

An authorized person should be able to understand the process without needing the owner to explain every label. Start with a conversation and an inventory review, then follow the wallet or provider’s approved testing procedure when appropriate.

  1. Can the designated person find the private index and identify the correct wallet or provider?
  2. Do they know which legal authority must be confirmed before acting?
  3. Can they find the current official instructions and the relevant secure recovery arrangement?
  4. Do they understand which information must never be shared in an email, support chat or public form?
  5. Is there a plan for a lost device, changed provider, unavailable signer or outdated contact?

Update the plan after meaningful changes to wallets, custody, representatives or legal documents. Follow your advisers’ review schedule. A successful conversation today does not guarantee that a changed setup can be recovered years later.

Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance highlights the need to consider access after death. Trezor’s backup guidance also recommends private inheritance planning and ongoing protection of the backup.

Update the records when you buy more Bitcoin.

A new purchase can change which wallet holds the BTC and which records the plan needs to identify. Confirm the receiving account and your recovery arrangements before increasing the amount held there. You do not need to share recovery words with a purchase provider to receive Bitcoin.

Our Bitcoin wire transfer page explains specialist help with the bank instructions, final price approval and delivery to your confirmed wallet. After an approved purchase, reconcile its receipt, quote and delivery record, then update your private inventory as appropriate.

If you use a hardware wallet, follow the wire-to-hardware-wallet checklist. If you only want a balance view, a watch-only wallet can monitor supported public information, but that view does not create spending authority or a recovery plan.

Crypto Dispensers provides purchase support. We do not create estate documents, determine an heir’s rights or guarantee recovery of an inherited wallet. Keep legal advice, recovery arrangements and the purchase process connected through your own records.

Crypto inheritance questions.

Will naming Bitcoin in a will recover a lost wallet?

A legal document does not recreate missing keys or the required backup information. Discuss legal authority and technical access together with qualified counsel and the relevant wallet or provider.

Should I put my recovery phrase in ordinary estate paperwork?

Do not expose spending secrets in documents that other people may receive or access. Ask qualified counsel and your wallet specialist to design a secure arrangement for the required information.

Can a watch-only wallet be the entire inheritance plan?

No. It can display public wallet activity without holding signing keys. The authorized person still needs the legal authority and the correct recovery or provider process.

Is multisig automatically better for inheritance?

It adds coordination and recovery requirements that need to fit the actual people and setup. Document the signing threshold, backups and required configuration rather than assuming more devices guarantee access.
