Wallet recovery / Practical guides
Trezor Keep Metal 24-word is a physical backup product for a 24-word BIP39 recovery phrase. Before buying, check the backup you actually use. Your device model alone is not enough to choose the right capsule. This guide helps you check compatibility and the recovery plan around it.

The capsule holds a physical record of recovery information. Trezor describes a stainless-steel product with a four-letter entry layout, a pre-marking pen, a punching tool and security seals. See the official 24-word product page for current package contents and specifications.
This is a documentation-based buying and setup guide. We have not physically tested the product, measured its resistance or verified every possible wallet combination. A useful purchase decision starts with whether it fits your existing backup and whether you can store it privately.
For the broader decision between materials and locations, use our seed phrase storage worksheet. Read our recovery phrase overview if you’re choosing your first backup.
| Your backup | What to check | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| 24-word BIP39 | Supported language, layout and official instructions. | The intended format for the 24-word model. |
| 12-word BIP39 | A product explicitly supporting that word count. | Confirm suitability with the maker before buying this model. |
| 20-word SLIP39 Single-share | The corresponding 20-word Single-share product. | Choose the version designed for that backup. |
| 20-word SLIP39 Multi-share | Share count, threshold and the matching product. | Each share needs its own appropriate physical record. |
| Unknown format | Wallet documentation and setup history. | Identify the format without sending anyone the words. |
Trezor’s current setup guide distinguishes the 24-word BIP39 version from its two 20-word SLIP39 versions. Its backup-format guide explains why devices can have different backup histories.
Buying a 24-word capsule does not convert a 20-word backup into BIP39. Do not reset a working wallet or alter its words to make them fit a purchased accessory.
Someone offering to pre-fill a capsule or ‘check’ your words remotely would gain access to sensitive recovery information. Record your own backup privately, following the maker’s instructions.
The important order in Trezor’s setup procedure is to mark the letters, verify from that marked record through its official backup check, then make the permanent punches. Follow the complete current setup instructions rather than relying on a summary when handling real secrets.
Confirm the word positions as well as the letters. A readable mark in the wrong position can still make the record unusable. Keep devices that could record the words away from the work area.
If a permanent mark is wrong or you cannot verify the record, pause and follow the manufacturer’s correction guidance. Keep your existing valid recovery record and working wallet while you resolve the issue. Do not discard them simply because you finished the physical marking.
Trezor advertises resistance to fire, water and impact. Those are manufacturer claims. Our team has not run destructive tests, and we do not interpret the claims as a promise that the backup survives every event.
Physical durability does not establish confidentiality. A person who can read or copy usable recovery information may be able to use it, depending on the wallet’s other requirements. A security seal can help indicate handling, while your storage and access plan remain important.
Likewise, a capsule recording the mnemonic does not automatically record a separately chosen passphrase. Our BIP39 passphrase guide explains what you would need to reproduce the intended wallet. Keep the recovery plan usable without placing every required secret in one exposed location.
You can keep a private maintenance note with the date, backup format, product version, successful check and the person authorized to retrieve it. Leave the actual words and passphrase out of that note. Treat location information as sensitive.
Review access after moving or changing the people who can reach the backup. If you find unexplained tampering or suspect someone copied it, consult the wallet manufacturer’s compromise instructions. A replacement container cannot make a copied secret private again.
For example, a sealed capsule can still be inaccessible after a key is lost or an access arrangement changes. Checking those dependencies is part of maintaining a recoverable backup.

The right accessory depends on the backup actually created or restored. Identify its format and word count first, then use the product maker’s matching instructions.
Trezor specifies separate 20-word products for its SLIP39 formats. Use the version designed for your backup rather than improvising a different layout.
If someone has copied usable recovery information, physical storage cannot erase that copy. Follow the wallet maker’s compromise instructions.
